At Upstate Veterinary Specialties, we support the future of Veterinary Medicine and offer a variety of different educational opportunities and programs for students joining our incredible veterinary community. Whether you are exploring the field of veterinary medicine, pursuing your LVT, or in veterinary school, we have an opportunity for you!
High School Students
If you are a high school student interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, we would love to give you a behind-the-scenes tour of our hospital where you can see our team in action and learn about the different positions and roles within the hospital.
Veterinary Technician Students
The veterinary technician role is a critical function within our veterinary teams. UVS is committed to providing an ideal learning environment and giving students exposure to various aspects of veterinary medicine in both specialty and emergency medicine. All students will be paired with a mentor who will work directly with you to help achieve your education goals.
- Externships/Preceptorships – Preceptor opportunities can be scheduled throughout the year, with placements typically ranging from two to four weeks. Preceptorships focus on shadowing and practicing technician skills for the student. Your mentor will work with you to help you accomplish your pre-determined skills list from your AVMA accredited program.
- Internships – Internships for bachelor’s programs are available for both medical and administrative programs. They are typically 16 weeks long and include a rotation through each department within the hospital. The schedule for the medical rotation will include days, nights, and weekends to provide the most comprehensive look at the field of emergency and specialty veterinary medicine. Students will have an opportunity to work alongside our teams and experience first-hand how a growing and successful emergency and specialty practice operates.
Both formal rotations and shadowing opportunities are available for veterinary students. For formal rotations, UVS provides an opportunity for veterinary students to rotate through our departments and see our growing variety of different cases from diagnosis to treatment, allowing students to develop both their medical knowledge and clinical skills simultaneously. For shadowing opportunities, UVS can pair you with an experienced DVM to give you a behind-the-scenes look into the fast-paced field of specialty and emergency medicine. Opportunities can be customized based on the student’s interests and academic requirements.
