Eric Fish, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. Eric Fish is a Western New York native, growing up just outside Buffalo. He studied Animal Science at Cornell University before earning his DVM from Western University of Health Sciences in 2012. He then continued his training with a rotating internship at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, followed by a combined clinical pathology residency and a PhD in cancer biology at Auburn University. Dr. Fish became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2016.

After residency, Eric remained at Auburn for three years on faculty. From there, he co-founded Lacuna Diagnostics, the first point-of-care digital cytology company, serving as Chief Medical Officer. He then worked at IDEXX as a pathologist and R&D manager, and more recently branched into freelance consulting. Throughout this time, Eric continued to practice as a relief ER vet, and that invaluable experience informs his diagnostic work.

Dr. Fish has published more than a dozen peer-reviewed studies, case reports, and textbook chapters, and frequently speaks at national and international conferences. He has taught students, interns, and residents at veterinary schools worldwide and remains passionate about education at every level. Eric’s professional interests include cytology, hematology, laboratory quality control, point-of-care diagnostics, and collaborating with clinicians to solve complex cancer and internal medicine cases. His favorite part of the job is knowing that one of his consults helped a pet get the right treatment on time.

When he’s not at work, Eric enjoys reading, writing, playing the drums and guitar, scuba diving, snowboarding, trying new restaurants, and traveling the world. He lives in the Capital Region with his wife, also a veterinarian, their rescue dogs Kali and Brooklyn, and their cats Bert and Ernie (who are littermates!)
