Ophthalmology
 A veterinary Ophthalmologist is a doctor who specializes in diseases that affect the health of your pet’s eye, its surrounding tissues and structures, and your pet’s vision. They combine medical and surgical treatments in order to most effectively treat your pet’s problems. While your primary care veterinarian can diagnose and treat many routine eye conditions, some diseases and injuries require the care of a doctor with advanced specialty training in ophthalmology to provide the best chance for a successful outcome for your pet.
Referral to an Ophthalmologist if often utilized for diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye), uveitis (inflammation within the eye), retinal detachment, sudden blindness, corneal ulcers, and ocular trauma. In some cases, your primary care veterinarian may simply consult with the Ophthalmologist about your pet’s condition and care. In other cases it may be necessary to refer you and your pet to our facility for more advanced diagnostics and treatment options, which may include surgery. Some specialized diagnostics and treatments include electroretinography (ERG), ocular ultrasound,  cataract removal, laser therapy, and specialized ocular surgery requiring microscopic assistance. All of the Ophthalmologist’s specialty training and education is focused on helping your pet to recover from or to effectively manage the ocular condition while still enjoying the highest quality of life possible.
Your veterinary Ophthalmologist will work together with your primary care veterinarian as part of your pet’s total health care team. With the Ophthalmologist’s added, specialized input concerning your pet’s ocular health or vision, your veterinarian will continue to provide all other aspects of your companion’s care.
